Drive to protect hilsa attacked by fishermen in Shariatpur

Five people including two police officers suffered injuries during an attack by fishermen in a mission to defend mother hilsa's home at Machirkandi area along Padma river, in Shariatpur's Vedorganj upazila.

The victims are the employees of Fisheries Extension Department Jahangir Hossain, field assistants Omar Ali and Biswajit Das Sub-inspector Mostafizur Rahman and Constable Mehdi Hasan from the Sokhipur Police Station, reports our Shariatpur correspondent , who quotes Tanbir A. Nasif. a upazila officer in the nirbahi (UNO) in Vedorganj.

They also received medical care from a the local health facility He stated.

Based on information that indicated a group of fishermen were fishing for Hilsa, despite the prohibition, a team from the department of fisheries and police carried out an operation that saw fishermen attack them according to the UNO reported.

Police have also detained five individuals as a result of the incident, he said.
